Satisfying ELWR Before Starting At UCSC

*UC is accepting a score of 680 or better on the SAT, Evidence-Based Reading and Writing to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement on a pilot basis, beginning with new students entering UC in Fall 2018 and after. The pilot will remain in effect until a new policy is adopted by the Academic Senate.

The requirement can also be met by earning a grade of C or higher in an acceptable English composition course offered by a college or university.

SAT (Reasoning-Writing) scores of 680+ on the chart above applies to exams taken January 2016 or before.

AP English exam can be Language & Composition or Literature & Composition

ACT English Language Arts (ELA) is the required ACT score for ELWR consideration (an ELA score is reported for students who also took the Writing component of the ACT).

**ACT 30+, combined English/Writing (LAST ADMINISTERED 2015) .

All students will complete Directed Self-Placement (DSP). If a student has not satisfied ELWR by one of the approved methods as noted above,( http://www.ucop.edu/elwr/ ),they will select their course based on the DSP recommendation they receive.

The university accepts the above means of satisfying requirements. We will honor the highest level of satisfaction. For example, students receiving an Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE) score of 8, but also scoring 4 on the AP English exam will satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR).

Matriculated students who have not satisfied the ELWR (by one of the pathways listed above) must enroll in the appropriate ELWR-required writing class every quarter until they have met the requirement. In each ELWR-required course, students will assemble a portfolio (portfolio process ended Spring 2018) to be evaluated for ELWR satisfaction. Students may not retake the AWPE.

ELWR-required classes are as follows:

College Core ELWR-required section or other College ELWR-required course ( most take 1st Quarter)
WRITING 20 (2nd Quarter)
WRITING 21 (3rd quarter)
WRITING 23 (4th quarter)

1ST QUARTER

Students who have not satisfied the ELWR by the time classes start, will be placed in a College course section with an instructor qualified to help with writing. College courses vary by college; contact your college for more information on which section you'll take.

In ELWR-required sections of the College course, students will assemble a portfolio (portfolio process ended Spring 2018) consisting of one 4-5 double-spaced, text-based, thesis-driven essay a student-written portfolio cover letter, and an instructor-prepared cover sheet. A Writing Program committee will evaluate the portfolio (portfolio process ended Spring 2018) to determine if it satisfies the ELWR. The portfolio outcome determines only satisfaction of the ELWR, and does not relate to passing or failing the course.

Students who earn a grade of "C" or better in their College course and satisfy the ELWR by the end of the quarter, will have satisfied the C1 requirement. Students must both satisfy the ELWR andearn a "C" or better in their College course to satisfy the C1 composition requirement.

Transfer Students Who Have Not Satisfied the ELWR

Students who first enter UCSC in fall, should take the AWPE in September. If they do not pass, they should plan to enroll in Writing 23 during fall quarter. Students who first enter UCSC in winter quarter should take the AWPE in January. If they do not pass, they should plan to enroll in Writing 20 during winter quarter. Students who first enter in spring quarter, should take the AWPE in early March. If they do not pass, they should plan to enroll in Writing 21 during spring quarter.

2ND QUARTER

Students who do not satisfy the ELWR by the end of fall quarter must enroll winter quarter in Writing 20 (check the Schedule of Classes for offerings and times/places).

Students who have not fulfilled the ELWR may not enroll in Writing 2, Rhetoric and Inquiry, nor enroll in courses that confer the Disciplinary Communication (DC). Students will receive full course credit for Writing 20.

In Writing 20, students will assemble a portfolio (portfolio process ended Spring 2018) consisting of one 4-5 double-spaced, text-based, thesis-driven essay a student-written portfolio cover letter, and an instructor-prepared cover sheet. A Writing Program committee will evaluate the portfolio (portfolio process ended Spring 2018) to determine if it satisfies the ELWR. The portfolio outcome determines only satisfaction of the ELWR, and does not relate to passing or failing the course.

3RD QUARTER

Students who haven't satisfied the ELWR by third quarter (students with less writing experience do take as long as three or four quarters), must enroll spring quarter in Writing 21.

In Writing 21, students will assemble a portfolio (portfolio process ended Spring 2018) consisting of one 4-5 double-spaced, text-based, thesis-driven essay a student-written portfolio cover letter, and an instructor-prepared cover sheet. A Writing Program committee will evaluate the portfolio (portfolio process ended Spring 2018) to determine if it satisfies the ELWR. The portfolio outcome determines only satisfaction of the ELWR, and does not relate to passing or failing the course.

SUMMER OPTION

Students who have not satisfied the ELWR by the end of their first year at UCSC may opt to take an appropriate course over the summer during UCSC's summer session, or at a community college. This course will not satisfy the ELWR , but students may submit an Appeal Packet of courswork from this course in an attempt to satisfy the ELWR.

Students should review these procedures before summer begins to verify the course they plan to take will focus on the type of writing that is appropriate for ELWR satisfaction by Appeal Packet.

4TH QUARTER

This is officially the last quarter to satisfy the ELWR. Students whose fourth quarter is fall, must enroll in Writing 23. Students whose fourth quarter is another quarter, must enroll in the available ELWR-required Writing course.

Almost all students who have followed the above prescribed program for writing improvement have been able to satisfy the ELWR by the end of their fourth quarter. Students who have not satisfied the ELWR by that time have generally not taken the recommended steps.

5TH QUARTER

Students who have not satisfied the ELWR requirement by the end of their fourth quarter, will have a hold placed on their enrollment for fifth quarter. ELWR holds will prevent students from re-enrolling at UCSC until they have satisfied ELWR. (See ELWR Enrollment Hold and Appeal Packet.) Once ELWR satisfaction has been achieved, students will go through the standard enrollment process.
